Online Building Permit Applications
The City of Chilliwack Building Department is pleased to announce the MyCity Portal for online Building permit applications. This portal will allow a person to apply for their permit and upload related digital files for review online, removing the need for paper documents.
As indicated on our main Building Permits page, the City is only accepting building permit applications that utilize this digital option for the following types of applications:
- Part 9 residential construction such as new single and two family buildings, additions and renovations.
- Rural and residential accessory building construction.
- Agricultural building construction.
- Part 3 commercial/industrial Tenant Improvement (TI) projects.
- Demolition permit applications.
- Utility connection (water/sewer/storm) permit applications.
- Sign permit applications (Pylon and Fascia signs).
Other types of Building Permit applications, such as those for new Part 3 Buildings, must still make a conventional hard copy submission for a Building Permit. Any questions regarding uncertainty on whether a project is able to be submitted digitally should be directed to [email protected] prior to a digital submission being made. Digital submissions for project types not indicated in the aforementioned list will not be accepted.
*Changes to the Online BP Applications Process*
The format of the submission requirements for the “Drawings” component of a Building Permit Digital application has changed. This change requires multiple page pdf drawings to be submitted as part of a Building Permit application. These multiple page pdf submissions should be distinct from one another based on drawing type. See the updated instructions noted below. (June 20, 2025)
Creating an Online Building Permit applications
- First time users will need to register to use the online portal for building permits.
- Once logged in to the account, the user will immediately see the home page. On the left-hand side of the page under Applications, select Building Permit, followed by ‘Apply for a new permit’.
- Follow the steps to create the Building Permit as prompted, ensuring that the information being provided is accurate and consistent with the type of construction being proposed.
- Once a Building Permit is created an email from [email protected] will be sent to the applicant, stating that they have a task to complete. First time users will be prompted to register for an account with ProjectDox. Users that are registered will receive a task to upload and submit their drawings and documents for pre-screening. You must accept a task in order to proceed, you can check current tasks under the “Task” tab in ProjectDox.
- In ProjectDox open the E-form by clicking “upload and submit” under the task tab. The E- form will have a button to “upload drawings” and “upload documents”. This will allow you to browse for files to upload. Drawings must be uploaded using the drawing button and documents must be uploaded using the documents button.
- Drawings and documents may be uploaded as multiple page PDF's and should be named according to their content. For example, architectural drawings should be named 'Architectural Plans', structural drawings named 'Structural Plans' and so on for mechanical, electrical, and other types of drawings. Names of the PDF's must not include dates, addresses, or version numbers. The upper left corner of the drawings should be left blank for "batch stamps" (completion stamps for City approvals). Documents such as Energy Advisor Reports, Geotechnical Reports, Alternative Solutions and others, should be uploaded separately as multiple page PDF documents.
- Once all the documents are uploaded, users will need to complete the task in the E-form by checking the confirmation box and clicking the “submit” button.
At this point, the Building Permit Application has been successfully submitted and sent to the City for a pre-screen review. Should the pre-screen review be accepted, a “date of application” will be assigned and the project will move forward. If the pre-screen review is not successful and the application is deemed to be incomplete, a request for additional information will be sent through Project Dox and the submission will remain pending without a “date of application”. In some circumstances, should necessary information not be readily available or received in a timely manner, the application may need to be cancelled at the pre-screen stage. A new application would then need to be made when that information is able to form part of the submission.
