Description:

Dirt Relations – The Story of British Columbia’s Indigenous Youth Mountain Bike Program Cycle Chilliwack, Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association (FVMBA) and GoByBike BC are very excited to share the following films as we celebrate Spring GoByBike week here in Chilliwack, June 3rd – 9th. Dirt Relations Dirt Relations tells the story of three men: Patrick Lucas, an 8th generation Canadian from Vancouver Island, Thomas Schoen, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, and Tom Eustache, a Secwepemc man and member of the Simpcw First Nation and how they formed an unlikely friendship to create the Indigenous Youth Mountain Bike Program. For the past decade, the IYMP, a non-profit that assists First Nations around western Canada to develop world class multi-purpose nature trails and support outdoor recreation and healthy living, has trained hundreds of youth to build trails and engage in the sport of mountain biking. The IYMBP has worked with dozens of Nations and built more than 100km of trails and are widely recognized as leaders in fostering meaningful reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. “Dirt Relations” tells the inspiring story of Thomas Schoen, alongside Patrick Lucas and Tom Eustache of the Simpcw First Nation, as they forge a path of understanding and collaboration through their shared love of mountain biking and trail building. The Trails Before Us THE TRAILS BEFORE US follows 17-year-old Nigel James, a Diné mountain biker, as he hosts the first Enduro race in the Navajo Nation. Through revitalizing old sheep and livestock trails on his grandparents’ land, Nigel and a new generation of riders honor the connection to their land, community, and culture. Muuxtuu: First of Many Together Episode 4 of Here, There, Everywhere @dvrgntminds traveled to Ucluelet on Vancouver Island to visit the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Nation. They met with the trail crew to learn how the Nation are balancing the preservation and development on the sacred land of Čumaata, with the goal of becoming the first culturally aware trail network. The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Nation are using trail building and mountain biking as a new opportunity for their community to connect with nature and to share their culture with visitors. All the proceeds from the evening will be donated to: Mémiyelhtel, this program supports Indigenous youth living within the traditional, unceded territory of Stό:lō Nation (specifically Chilliwack).
