2023 Annual Report I CITY OF CHILLIWACK CITY OF CHILLIWACK I 2023 Annual Report 56 57 3 NEW OFF-LEASH DOG AREAS CREATED PUBLIC WORKS AND PARKS 2023 HIGHLIGHTS The Public Works and Parks Department maintains over 100 parks and natural areas which together make up over 400 hectares of green space. Most community parks provide a variety of facilities suitable for a day visit, while smaller parks provide playgrounds and often sports courts and picnic tables. Public Works and Parks also maintains over 400 km of recreational trails, ranging from challenging hillside terrain to easy and flat riverside trails, in addtion to over 1,500 km of roads and storm drains. The Public Works and Parks Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's: y Parks and trails. y Sports fields. y Storm sewer system. y Dyke infrastructure. y Roads. y Open drainage. 3 DRINKING FOUNTAINS INSTALLED AT THREE PARKS ✅ Addition of beginner pump tracks in Jinkerson Park and Vedder Park. ✅ Installed playgrounds for 2 to 5 year old children at Uplands Park and Westview Park. ✅ Installed 46 parking stalls at Yarrow Community Park and Vedder Rotary Trail. ✅ Installed tire stops and signage at Townsend Park, Hope River Rotary Trail, Meadowbrook Park and the Community Forest. ✅ Replaced playground at Yarrow Pioneer Park. 46 NEW PARKING STALLS ADDED AT TWO PARKS ✅ Established 857 metres of trail loop and completed 300-step staircase on northern slope of Little Mountain. ✅ Reconstructed stairs, using metal, at Weeden Park. ✅ Installed drinking fountains at Crimson Ridge Park, Jinkerson Park and Townsend Park. The Recreation & Culture Department is responsible for the coordination and/or provision of leisure services. The department operates a number of facilities, coordinates the use of numerous sports fields and parks and is responsible for community events, public art and facility maintenance. RECREATION & CULTURE 2023 HIGHLIGHTS ✅ Supported 97 community events, including Yarrow Days and the Rotary Christmas Parade. ✅ Celebration and Activity Grant. ƒ46 events supported. ƒ8,188 residents participated. ƒProvided $15,738 in Neighbourhood Grant funding to support block parties. ✅ Public Art. ƒPartnered with Chilliwack Community Arts Council to create and install the "Love Lock Heart" at Central Community Park. ƒInstalled decorative bike racks at various civic facilities in partnership with Public Art Program and Active Transportation Plan. ✅ Building Maintenance Projects. ƒReceived $715,000 grant for waste heat recovery system at Coliseum to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 55% and reduce energy consumption. ƒReceived the BC Hydro Clean Energy Champion Award. ✅ Received a Rick Hansen Foundation Gold Standard Accessibility Certification rating for the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre. 109,419 VISITS TO CHEAM CENTRE 124,208 VISITORS TO LANDING LEISURE CENTRE 68,241 VISITORS TO CULTURAL CENTRE 6,170 MUSEUM VISITS 2,343 VISITS TO ROTARY POOL The department operates and coordinates operations of various facilities: y 28 civic facilities. y 58 grass sports fields. y 68 ball diamonds. y Atchelitz Hall. y Cheam Centre. y Rotary Outdoor Pool. y Chilliwack Cultural Centre. y Chilliwack Curling & Community Centre. y Evergreen Hall. y Four synthetic turf fields. y Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve. y Heritage Park. y Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre. y Landing Sports Centre. y Libraries - Chilliwack, Sardis, Yarrow. y Sardis Sports Complex.
