25 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Highlights 332 Fire Responses 591 Alarms Activated 264 MotorVehicle Incidents 196 Medical Calls 280 Burning Complaints 1,237 Public Service Calls 257 Public Hazard Calls 32 Rescues 58 Hazardous Materials 5 Mutual Aid Calls 2017 Number of Calls for Service: 3,252 Fire Prevention y 8,700 residents educated or trained in fire and life safety and emergency preparedness y 85% of structure fires in Chilliwack occurred in single family and multi-family residential buildings y Inspected numerous high risk buildings as part of our ongoing health and safety team inspection program with bylaw officers and RCMP members y Fire Department personnel completed 1,104 fire and life safety inspections to ensure fire code and bylaw compliance Community Events y Collected over 18,000 food donation items for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Food Drive y Chilliwack Firefighters Charitable Society raised and donated over $34,000 to the BC Burn Fund and local charities y Partnered with Chilliwack Bowls of Hope to deliver and serve hot soup to school age children y The Chilliwack Firefighters Education Fund awarded 12 post-secondary financial awards to Chilliwack high school graduates y Chilliwack Firefighters Charitable Society awarded 4 scholarships to Chilliwack high school graduates Emergency Preparedness y Provided suppression resources for the BC Interior wildfire efforts and local support for Interior evacuees y Conducted Emergency Operations Centre exercises with representatives from all City departments y Provided training and support for local Emergency Social Services volunteers y Emergency Social Services volunteers provided emergency support and assistance to evacuees as a result of residential fires y Delivered emergency preparedness presentations to a variety of participants such as neighbourhood groups, community service organizations, service clubs, First Nations, City employees and the public Training Infrastructure and building construction improvements continue at the Fire Training Centre. The Training Centre was utilized in training our local firefighters and military personnel for deployment to the Interior wildfires. Delivered competency based training to 129 firefighters and 35 fire officers in all aspects of fire and rescue services. Delivered training to and graduated 12 new paid on-call firefighters in the five month recruit training program. Paid on-call firefighters contributed over 25,000 hours of service to training and emergency responses.
