24 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Fire Protection Chilliwack’s six fire halls protect an area over 250 square kilometres and are staffed as needed by paid on-call firefighters, providing services of fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical aid. Fire engines staffed with career firefighters operate out of downtown Fire Hall 1 and Sardis Fire Hall 4 on a 24 hour basis. The Fire Department employs 32 career and 129 paid on-call firefighters and fire officers who are managed and supported by: y 1 Fire Chief y 3 Assistant Chiefs y 2 Training Officers y 2 Public Educators/Fire Inspectors y 2 Administrative Support Staff The Chilliwack Fire Department provides the following services: y Fire Prevention including public education, fire code enforcement and fire investigations y Public Hazard AssessmentandMitigation y Fire Suppression y Rescues y Motor Vehicle Incident Mitigation y Emergency Medical Aid y Emergency Preparedness Programs T he Fire Department organizes and prepares for emergency response to disasters, emergency preparedness programs and recovery planning. The Fire Department works closely with local volunteer groups, community organizations, neighbouring fire departments and other levels of government that include: y Emergency Social Services y Amateur Radio Club y Search and Rescue y School District 33 y Fraser Health Authority y Provincial Government y First Nations y Other local governments The Fire Department has a very proactive fire prevention program. Fire prevention services delivered to the community include fire and life safety inspections of all public buildings and public education to schools, seniors, community groups and local employers. Fire prevention and community awareness activities include: y Fire Prevention Week y Burn Awareness Week y Emergency Preparedness Week y Safety Village Education Program y Youth Fire Setter Program y Home Smoke Alarm Program y Seniors Fire Safety Program y Health and Safety Inspections y Fire Alarm Upgrade Program y Home Safe Program
