22 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Walden Park Disc Golf Course A disc golf course was opened for play in Walden Park. A professional designer from the British Columbia Disc Golf Association completed the course design. During the summer, the course was extremely well-used and a local disc golf society has nowbeen formed in Chilliwack as a result. Fairfield Island Park After consultation with the neighbourhood, a new play structure was selected to replace the old equipment. Selected for its simple open style and overall strength in structure and design, this new structure will provide years of fun play time. Carter Park Development A vacant parcel of land on Carter Road was transformed into a neighbourhood park with swings, slide and seesaw. In early July, this new park was welcomed by the neighbourhood as the construction fences came down and the play began. Spruce Grove Park Some of the existing play equipment was incorporated into the updated park design. The new design was expanded as the service area of this neighbourhood park is larger than average. Green Acres Square Park This small park located on Elm Street, in the downtown area, was revamped in 2017. Included in this project was the installation of a new play structure, swing set, pathway, bench and a new trash receptacle. PARK IMPROVEMENTS Third Avenue Park Grass Roots Grant A group of local residents submitted a Grass Roots Grant application to add a play area, including spinning and bouncing play elements, to the park. Completed in the summer of 2017, the additional play area creates a more varied play environment for children in this neighbourhood. PARROT’S FEATHER ERADICATION The presence of this invasive aquatic vegetation was first noted in No. 3 Road Slough in 2003. The proliferation of this plant in the area not only presents significant drainage problems, but also environmental concerns. Complete excavation and removal of the plant from the channel was undertaken in 2017.
