2017 Annual Report

21 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Highlights Salmon Ridge Loop Trail Salmon Ridge, in Promontory, has two excellent vistas with one view looking west to Cultus Lake and the other view looking north towards downtown Chilliwack. In the spring of 2017, Operations built a gravel loop trail to provide access to the viewpoints. The trail to the east has a lower grade for beginners while the other provides more advanced terrain. Little Mountain Park Stair Replacement Little Mountain Park is connected to Chartwell Drive by a combination of trails and stairs. To improve access, 63 new composite stairs were installed. Thom Creek Trail Stair Replacement The 99 wooden box stairs, constructed in the mid-1990s above Sylvan Drive, had been deteriorating over the past few years, requiring the frequent replacement of rotting boards. There are now 130 plastic composite stairs connecting Sylvan Drive to the Mt. Thom trail above. Vedder Park Dog Off-Leash Area Expansion This well-used dog off-leash area saw the construction of a new small dog compound, which has increased the dog off-leash area by 3,030 square meters, for a total area of almost one hectare. Vedder North Dyke Dog Off-Leash Trail Signage at the beginning and end of this new off-leash trail informs dog owners of the etiquette expected. This trail runs between Lickman Road and Webster Road along the North Dyke. This new off-leash concept has been well-received both in the local neighbourhood and community-wide. Sheffield Way A new dog off-leash area was constructed at the intersection of Sheffield Way and Webb Avenue and includes a 20 stall parking lot. Canada 150 The Landing Spray Park was reconstructed in 2017 with help from a Federal Canada 150 Grant. The new spray park design is based on water motion, excitement and reduced levels of maintenance. This new park requires minimal seasonal maintenance and the main feature is the large tipping bucket called the “Big Top Soaker”. Landing Skate Park Renovation With the help of a Federal Canada 150 grant, this facility was redesigned, reconstructed and was reopened on September 23, 2017 to great fanfare. Updates to the Landing Skate Park included the repair or replacment of concrete ramps and removal of hazards, as well as the addition of several new, exciting features. These new features include a pump hump and rainbow ledge, a volcano feature, a set of steps and several quarter pipes. TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS
