17 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Highlights Environmental Services - Compostable Waste Transfer Station & Landfill Upgrades The Transfer Station was required when the City began the expanded Curbside Collection program to include the separate collection of compostable waste, including food scraps, food soiled paper and yard waste. Construction work began mid-August 2016 with substantial completion in May 2017. The project scope included a 900 m 2 Transfer Station building and modifications to the existing residential waste off-load area to facilitate easier unloading and handling of various materials, such as drywall, yard waste, clean soil, concrete and asbestos. Curbside Program Changes Big changes to the Curbside Collection Program commenced in May, with the separate collection of compostable waste. Food waste, food-soiled paper and yard waste are collected in contractor supplied Green Carts and dropped off at the new Compostable Waste Transfer Station. The waste is ultimately transported to Net Zero Waste in Abbotsford for composting. Vedder Bridge Replacement The Vedder Bridge Replacement Project reached substantial completion in December of 2017. The value of the contract awarded to Emil Anderson was $11.3 million. The old 1947 Vedder Bridge was replaced by a new bridge that was launched over the Vedder River. The project also included a new roundabout at the intersection of Vedder and Chilliwack Lake Roads. Vedder Road Roundabout Art The City of Chilliwack is pleased to announce a public art partnership with Stó:lō Nation for the Vedder Road Roundabout Art Project to celebrate the history of the Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe and Stó:lō Nation. The artwork was designed by Squiala First Nation Chief David Jimmie and Bonny Graham, Coast Salish Aboriginal artist, in consultation with the Stó:lō Nation Chiefs Council and Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe. 6,000 Residents signed up for the Curbside Collection App Separating compostable waste & recycling resulted in a waste diversion rate of approximately 58% - up from 34% in 2016 30% reduction in the amount of garbage collected from 2016 to 2017
