16 City of Chilliwack 2017 Annual Report Engineering The Engineering Department is comprised of various divisions including Transportation, Drainage, Utilities, Environmental Services and Flood Protection. These groups work closely with the Planning and Strategic Initiatives Department as well as the Operations and Parks Departments to collaborate on works required to meet the growth in the community. Transportation y Public transit system y Road networks for all users: motorists, pedestrians and cyclists y Road improvements and urbanization including bridges, asphalt, sidewalks, bike lanes, street lighting and drainage y Traffic signals, roundabouts and traffic control devices y Traffic and transportation safety including Safer City programs Utilities y Potable water systems including reservoirs y Sanitary sewer systems and wastewater treatment Environmental Services y Solid and compostable waste management y Groundwater and surface water protection y Air quality y Energy management y Biodiversity Flood Protection y Monitoring snow pack and stream flow for the Fraser and Vedder Rivers y Flood protection studies and planning y Maintaining flood response plans for the Fraser and Vedder Rivers y Infrastructure upgrades to improve overall community flood protection y Sediment removal from the Vedder River floodway to maintain flow capacity Drainage y Storm drainage system improvements including storm sewers, ditches and pump stations y Drainage channel improvements
