Sports Fields and Ball Diamonds Set to Open June 11 June 8, 2020

Chilliwack, BC: On Thursday, June 11, user groups will once again be able to book the City’s grass facilities, including sports fields, ball diamonds and artificial turf fields. Physical distancing signage will be installed at each location as a reminder to users.

BC is taking an aligned approach to the return to sport. The non-profit organization viaSport has led the process of reopening amateur sport across BC and released Return to Sport Guidelines to help individual sport organizations create detailed plans for the safe return of their sport during the pandemic. On June 11, user groups may begin field bookings again, once they have finalized safety plans, by following the same process with the City as in the past.

“I would like to thank user groups for their patience as we coordinated safe reopening procedures with multiple agencies,” said Mayor Popove. “Organized sports, with some modifications to keep everyone involved safe, are a great way to foster social connection and improve mental health.”

While the health authorities generally considers outdoor facilities safer than indoors, user groups will still need to have measures and modifications in place to support public safety, such as focusing on drills and skill building, limiting touch points and ensuring physical distancing. Every organization must operate within provincial health restrictions to promote the safety of our communities and all outdoor facility users should continue to take individual precautions and stay home if sick.

City staff continue to work on plans to safely reopen additional recreational facilities. Visit chilliwack.com/COVID-19 for more information about the City’s response to COVID-19.
