Publicity information for exhibit. Our exhibit is called “Fragments: Explorations in Mixed-Media Collage”. The artists of “Fragments: Explorations in Mixed-Media Collage”, Christine Newsome, Betty Meiszner, Vicki Ray and Dianne Hultgren are dedicated to exploring the possibilities in mixed-media as an art form. Mixed-media collage lends itself to pushing the boundaries and each artist represented here has a very unique approach. The results are rich, diverse and exciting.

Open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 12 noon to 5 pm. Reception, August Aug. 12th 12 noon to 3 pm.

Registration at the Library is ongoing. Are you a struggling reader in grade 1-4? Need a little extra encouragement and help with reading? Get matched up with a Big Buddy in our Reading Buddies Program at one of the Chilliwack Libraries for some extra help once a week! French Immersion students are also welcome! Reading Buddies is a program that pairs high school students and adult volunteers with kids in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help. Sign up begins in September, and we will continue matching buddies until Spring 2018. Big Buddies must be aged 15 + and/or registered in Grades 10 to 12.

7 pm – 8:30 pm. The Chilliwack Uke Club will be hosting free, drop in jam sessions at the Chilliwack Library! Whether you're a beginner or seasoned expert, no matter your age, if you have an interest in learning the ukulele you're welcome here! Bring your own ukulele from home, borrow one of the library's Uke 'n Play Ukulele Kits, or use one provided by the club. This program is in partnership with the Chilliwack Academy of Music. Space is limited. Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Registration for the walk will begin at 12pm and the walk will commence at 1pm. Parkinson SuperWalk is the single most important provincial and national awareness and fundraising event for Parkinson Society British Columbia (PSBC). Over 20 communities across the province organize walks during the weekend of September 9th – 10th, and 16th while raising money for research and support services through individual pledges and corporate sponsorships. This year, our goal is to attract over 2,400 walkers and raise at least $460,000 in BC. Proceeds from SuperWalk will enable the Society to invest in research and continue to provide essential programs and services to the 13,300 individuals and their families who live with Parkinson’s in BC.

The Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope is the largest and most powerful event of its kind in the country. Held in 39 communities nationwide, it is the only walk in Canada to direct all attention and fundraising towards overcoming ovarian cancer. This event unites communities across the country and encourages people who have been affected by the disease to stand together in raising awareness. All proceeds support Ovarian Cancer Canada. The Senior’s Resources Society is pleased to present “Taking Care of Business” a Community Education session held on Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 from 1:30 – 3:30 at Evergreen Hall, 9291 Corbould Street. InterAction, an exhibit presented by Heinz and Lois Klassen, a husband and wife team, who work together to each express their individual chosen medium. Heinz's works includes drawing objects which express his unique vision of the world around him. Lois’s quilts are designed to be hung on a wall, and appreciated as one would view a painting.

The late summer harvest is upon us and it is time to celebrate! On Sunday September 17th join Earthwise Agassiz at 6031 Golf Road to celebrate the harvest and learn more about the plans for this site. Doors will be open from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Guests are invited to explore the wonderful features of the property, take a self guided tour of the site and enjoy a stroll along the newly initiated streamside and woodland trail. Freshly harvested organic produce from the Earthwise Farm will be available for sale along with local artisanal items. Chef Derek Bothwell, of Vancouver's Bottleneck Restaurant, be on location to serve delicious lunch offerings featuring produce fresh from the farm. Representatives from the Earthwise Society and other local organizations will be there to share information about the projects under way or planned for the property. Earthwise Society acquired the Agassiz Demonstration Farm and Garden in 2015 and since then they have been working together with community partners, organizations, and volunteers. This year, the Society initiated the first phases of an ecological demonstration garden featuring heritage, pollinator and native plants, enhanced riparian habitat along the Miami River, began to create a streamside and woodland trail, and expanded their organic farm production, including an apiary. Jack’s Cycle Presents the Ride 4 Ran. On Saturday, September 23rd, Ruth and Naomi’s Mission will hold the first ever Ride 4 Ran bike ride. Come and join in on the fun! Families, or novice riders can take part in the 5k fun ride, while more experienced riders can take on the 25k route. For the elite rider, come and conquer the Granfondo (100k) to Chillliwack Lake and back! The cost to take part is $25 per individual OR per family. Please use the pledge sheet to gather names and commitments from people who are willing to support you and Ruth and Naomi’s Mission through sponsoring your ride. Join our monthly BeTween Book Club and bring along your mom, grandpa, sister (you decide) who also loves to read! New to 2017, the BeTween Book Club aims to read books, have lively discussions, eat snacks and meet other book lovers! At the first meeting we’ll discuss what the book club is all about, pick up the first book and have some snacks! Recommended for ages 9-13.

2 pm – 3:30 pm. Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, can damage your blood vessels and cause health problems. Anyone can develop high blood pressure, but it becomes more common as you get older. This workshop, presented by COSCO Senior’s Health and Wellness Institute, will review the effects of high blood pressure, discuss the need to monitor your blood pressure, talk about treatment options, and stress the importance of prompt diagnosis. 11 am – 1 pm. Chilliwack Library celebrates BC Culture Days (https://bc.culturedays.ca/en) with a Henna workshop for Adults and Teens (13 and up). In this introductory, hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to apply Henna, the best way to take care of your Henna, as well as interesting facts about this ancient art. All supplies are provided for this free session but space is limited. Registration is required, please call the library at 604-792-1941 to reserve your spot.

Chilliwack Breast Feeding Challenge Saturday September 30th 9:30am—11:30am. 46361 Yale Rd. E., Chilliwack BC. Every year, on the 40th Saturday of the year at 11am, mothers and children unite at different sites around the world to compete in the annual Queintessence Breatfeeding Challenge to set a record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. The Challenge strives to increase public awareness of the normality of breastfeeding, the benefits to mother, child and community and the ways in which women need support to achieve the recommended duration for breastfeeding. In 2016 Chilliwack had 156 babies breastfed simultaneously placing us first in North America! This is an amazing achievement and we are so proud that our community is so supportive about the health and wellness of our children. 2017 will be the 17th annual Chilliwack Breastfeeding Challenge!
