Hazardous Waste
What is hazardous waste?
The Federal Government defines hazardous waste as "those wastes which, due to their nature and quantity, are potentially hazardous to human health and/or the environment and which require special disposal techniques to eliminate or reduce the hazard".
Some hazardous wastes that are commonly found around the house include:

***Do not place hazardous materials in your regular garbage stream, or dispose of them through the sanitary or storm sewers. These substances can adversely impact air, soil and water quality, as well as human health.

RESIDENTIAL hazardous waste disposal:
Household Hazardous Waste Day - held annually in October.
This is a free service offered to all Chilliwack residents to dispose of their hazardous waste in an environmentally responsible manner.
Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) - contact the RCBC Hotline at 1-800-667-4321 or through email at [email protected]. RCBC also has a free app available at http://www.rcbc.bc.ca/services/recyclepedia-app to help users find drop-off locations and recycling options for products across BC.
Chilliwack Bottle Depot 45934 Trethewey Avenue
Accepts certain residential household hazardous waste including electronic waste (ie: computer parts, monitors, TVs, scanners), batteries, light bulbs/fixtures, flammable liquids, pesticides and old paint. Conditions apply - not all types of household hazardous wastes are accepted.
Sardis Bottle Depot 45635B Lark Road
Accepts certain residential household hazardous waste including electronic waste (ie: computer parts, monitors, TVs, scanners), batteries, light bulbs/fixtures and old paint. Conditions apply - not all types of household hazardous wastes are accepted.
COMMERCIAL hazardous waste:
Businesses with hazardous wastes should contact a Hazardous Waste Collection Company. Look in the Yellow Pages under Waste Reduction and Disposal Services. Please note that commercial hazardous wastes are not accepted at the Chilliwack Bottle Depot, Sardis Bottle Depot or the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day.

Year-Round Disposal of Hazardous Waste:
Waste Motor Oil/Antifreeze
Used oil filters, used plastic oil/antifreeze containers (maximum 50 litre size), used antifreeze, and used oil can be recycled at designated return collection points free of charge. These materials pose a potential environmental hazard and must be disposed of properly.

Batteries
Wet Cell (car batteries) - can be dropped off at the Chilliwack Bottle Depot and Sardis Bottle Depot for recycling, free of charge.
Dry Cell (household batteries) - visit http://www.call2recycle.ca/british-columbia/ for a list of locations accepting batteries for recycling, free of charge.
Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs)
CFLs can be returned free of charge to Canadian Tire, Rona, London Drugs, the Sardis Bottle Depot, or Chilliwack Bottle Depot for safe disposal and recovery of mercury vapour.
Asbestos-Containing Materials
The Bailey Sanitary Landfill will accept asbestos-containing materials for disposal (strict material preparation and documentation requirements apply).
Pharmaceuticals
Expired and unused prescription medications, cold treatments, herbal products and vitamins should be returned to the pharmacy where purchased. More information on this program can be obtained at http://www.healthsteward.ca/returns/british-columbia.
